Moon Vineyards

Paul Lato is one of Santa Barbara’s finest artisanal winemakers. He is a hybrid of a poet and a chemist. His elegant wines showcase his genuine passion for what he does with labels signing off “with love and gratitude.” Paul’s approach to winemaking is similar to his design style expressing authenticity, harmony, and elegance - splashed with an undercurrent of foxy.

I met Paul while working with Napa Valley Winery Exchange in San Francisco. He approached me to design a series of pop-up wine labels. We collaborated on several from concept to completion.

Space Cadet was inspired by Paul’s meeting with astronaut Dave Scott. They spent many hours talking about space. Initially, the name started as a joke. After diving into the project, we started to craft it into a reality. I came up with the idea for a moon vineyard pulling inspiration from the below image of the Apollo 15 Mission. The wrap-around label set the stage for an exploration through the stars. Our intention was to create a label that would be fun to look at and spark a few existential conversations around the dinner table.

Most of Paul’s wines have an
element of humor that make
them undeniably charming.

Inspiration for Boogie Nights came from one of Paul’s trips to Croatia. The Adriatic sunshine warmed the air and the boat was ready to set out for a day on the water. The orange peeled aromas of the local Malvasia mixed with the fresh sea air brought him the bliss he wished to recreate back in California. As the sun faded, the brilliant lights of the quaint village in the background came alive. Our intention was to create a modern and sophisticated label that would inspire curiosity and a spirit of adventure. The bold graphic solution aimed to prove less can be more. In that same light, the joie de vivre of life can come from simple pleasures - and in the glass.
